Gabriel Vicéns (b. 1988) is a
guitarist and composer from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, currently
based in New York City.
His work spans a wide range of contemporary musical
expressions, including modern creative jazz, new classical
music, and experimental genres. In his compositional
practice, Vicéns engages deeply with themes of
cultural identity, diaspora, decolonization, ambiguity,
memory, and temporality, as well as the interplay between
sound and visual art.
Methodologically, his work employs an expansive array of
approaches and techniques, ranging from improvisation and
indeterminacy to serialism, minimalism, microtonality, and
through-composition. Many of his pieces incorporate
intricate polyrhythms rooted in jazz and Afro–Puerto
Rican folkloric traditions such as bomba and plena, often
utilizing native Puerto Rican instruments. This
multidimensional approach reflects Vicéns’
distinct voice as both a composer and performer,
demonstrating his deep engagement with a broad and dynamic
musical landscape.
Vicéns has performed at renowned festivals and venues
throughout Europe, the United States, and Latin America. He
has released five albums under his own name, two as a
co-leader with the experimental ensemble No Base Trio, and
several others as a sideman. His recordings are published by
Clepsydra Records, Stradivarius, Inner Circle Music, and
Setola di Maiale, and his compositions are available through
Edition Wandelweiser, Edizioni Musicali Stradivarius, and
his own website.
He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Caribbean
Music at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico
and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at Queens
College, City University of New York. He earned a Doctor of
Musical Arts degree in Jazz Performance from Stony Brook
University under the supervision of Ray Anderson. During his
doctoral studies, Vicéns also focused on composition,
working closely with Daria Semegen with an emphasis on
contemporary classical and experimental music. In addition,
he studied composition privately with Carlos Cabrer, Lois V.
Vierk, Marti Epstein, and Antoine Beuger.
Vicéns has also focused on painting at The Art
Students League of New York, where he studied with Color
Field painter Pat Lipsky and occasionally assisted in her
studio.
He is a recipient of the prestigious New Jazz Works grant
from Chamber Music America (2023). His work has been
featured in numerous publications worldwide, including
American Record Guide, DownBeat, Fanfare, JazzTimes, and
Neue Musikzeitung.
